Grizzly Bear Discovery Center
One of the first things we got to do when we were in Yellowstone was go to a place called the Grizzly Bear and Wolf Discovery Center. This is just a small exhibit space where you learn about them, but it’s a refuge for bears that would otherwise have to be euthanized. They have 9 grizzly bears, about 10 wolves a couple bald eagles and a couple of owls that they’re caring for because they can no longer live in the wild. Either they were injured at some point, or they were coming dangerously close to humans and it was either put them down, or put them in a facility like this. We were so glad we went…hands down this is the best man-made habitat I’ve ever seen for animals in captivity. Not only was it set up with trees and a river, but it was designed to where most of the habitat didn’t need a fence so there was a very clear view of them when we were looking at them. And the best part was, that the girls got to have a hands on experience with them! At the evening feeding time, they locked the bears safely up, and let a few kids go into the habitat and hide their food for them. After the kids were out, they let out a couple bears and we got to watch them forage around and find the food they’d put out. It really was awesome. Sorry for a ‘pic flood’ but I took a lot of shots for this one!
